Swiss Bar Fire Exposes Safety Oversight Failures

(MENAFN) A bar in the Swiss resort town of Crans Montana, where 40 people lost their lives in a devastating New Year’s blaze, had not undergone mandatory yearly inspections for the past five years, the town’s mayor revealed on Tuesday.

Nicolas Feraud stated during a press briefing that Le Constellation bar had been without safety reviews, investigations, or audits for half a decade before the tragedy, which also left 116 people injured.

Addressing journalists, Feraud announced that sparkler candles—identified as the cause of the fire—have now been prohibited inside venues.

Investigators reported Friday that they believe sparkling candles affixed to champagne bottles ignited the deadly fire when they came into contact with the bar’s ceiling.

"Periodic inspections were not conducted between 2020 and 2025," the mayor admitted, adding that they "bitterly regret" this lapse.

He stressed that the council is not tasked with determining accountability for the disaster. "That will be the job of the investigators," Feraud said, while emphasizing that his municipality seeks full transparency as they "owe it to the victims and their families."

The mayor also underscored that neither he nor his councilors would resign, noting they were chosen by the residents of Crans Montana and would not "jump ship now."

"We’re profoundly sorry, and I know how hard that will be for the families," he added.
